Binary opposition theory

Narrative Theories: Levi – Strauss and Binary Opposites – mollynewmana2media
(A picture of Levi Strauss)

A notion of "binary opposites" was put forth by French anthropologist Levi Strauss in the 1900s. According to this idea, most media narratives, including those in novels and movies, feature key characters who are in opposition to one another. These polar opposites serve to introduce contrast, advance the story, and thicken the storyline.

Binary opposites can be main characters , or colours , or anything that are complete opposite to each other

Good/bad
Light/dark
Day/night

For example

Batman the dark night
Batman and Joker (drawing) by FlyinFreak on DeviantArt
From this picture I can depict 2 binary opposites , Good vs Evil and Dark vs light

with batman being the dark with his all black costume while still being the good guy
while joker is the light in the picture but is the Evil
